GMM Offers Political Insights, Business Opportunities
ICI’s General Membership Meeting (GMM) will offer attendees the opportunity to hear expert opinions on the state of U.S. politics and how their business could be affected. In the April 22, 2016, edition of Focus on Funds, Eaton Vance Chairman and CEO Tom Faust, 2016 GMM chair, has the details.

Stephanie Ortbals-Tibbs, ICI Director, Media Relations: Asset management requires long-term thinking. But current events can definitely have an impact on the bottom line, so that’s exactly why they are on the agenda at this year’s General Membership Meeting. I spoke with GMM Chair and Eaton Vance Chairman and CEO Tom Faust at his Boston headquarters. He shared with me some insights on the global and national experts in the lineup this year.
Tom Faust, Eaton Vance Chairman and CEO: Michael Bloomberg will be interviewed by Paul Stevens, and I think that will be a very interesting interchange, as everyone knows Michael Bloomberg has been one of the real leaders in our business. He created the Bloomberg business, that all of us in the room are customers of. He moved beyond that, became mayor of New York and had a very significant, very successful, run in that position. But where he sits today is at the intersection of finance, government, and politics, and I’m sure we’ll have lots of interesting observations about all of those topics and, particularly, this year’s political season.
Ortbals-Tibbs: This is also one of those years where everybody is talking politics and the business impact it could have. And we’re going to have some of the biggest names in the business there to talk about it as well.
Faust: Stuart Rothenberg and Charlie Cook are two of the foremost seers in the American political arena, and we’re going to have the opportunity to hear from them and try to interpret and perhaps even predict what’s going to happen in this political season.
Ortbals-Tibbs: Tom, as a CEO I know you make careful decisions about which employees to send to meetings, and how many, but when it comes to GMM you always find an easy answer, because the meeting networking opportunities are really just unparalleled.
Faust: I’ve had the chance over many years to attend quite a few of the GMM sessions, and I’ve very much enjoyed and have benefited from that experience. I think this year will likely prove to be a particularly interesting session where not only do we offer interesting programs, but there’s the ongoing opportunity to network and meet with colleagues from all different parts of the industry, both in the U.S. and internationally.
