ETF Assets and Net Issuance
May 2024
Washington, DC, June 27, 2024—The combined assets of the nation’s exchange-traded funds (ETFs) were $8.97 trillion in May, according to ICI. The Institute’s monthly statistical collection also includes the value of shares issued and redeemed by exchange-traded funds.
Statistics contained in the Institute’s monthly ETF report have been obtained from information provided to ICI by exchange-traded funds and commodity funds. Commodity funds are listed in the Domestic (Sector/Industry) category.

Highlights: Assets of all exchange-traded funds rose in May by $424.74 billion, or 5.0 percent, to $8.97 trillion. Over the past 12 months, ETF assets increased $2.04 trillion, or 29.4 percent. Assets in domestic equity ETFs increased $1.58 trillion since May 2023, and global equity ETF assets rose $249.46 billion during this period. At the end of May 2024, assets of bond funds were $1.56 trillion and hybrid funds were $36.30 billion and commodity funds were $149.66 billion.
During May, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $94.65 billion. In May 2023, the value of all ETF shares issued exceeded that of shares redeemed by $30.81 billion.
